Why Buy a Custom Rod?

It’s a good question. These toys are certainly not a necessity. The truth is, you can fish with almost any rig that includes a line and a hook. Heck, soda cans serve as reels on piers in the Bahamas. Besides, racked rods are generally well-made and dependable. The thing is, mass produced rods are a lot like diapers - built to serve the widest possible market from theaqua_20.gif (1413 bytes) bottom up. Even the higher priced poles are pretty generic in function and performance.

So, are custom rods necessary to enjoy a day on the water?  I guess that depends on your definition of enjoyment. On dry land, any four door sedan will get you from here to there. But wouldn’t you prefer to make the trip in a NASCAR pace car? That’s why somewhere along the line every angler worth his saltaqua_20.gif (1413 bytes) develops a hunger for a custom built fishing rod.

But what about the price tag? In the past, handcrafted fishing poles were usually built by retired boat guides who refused to take up shuffleboard. These crusty craftsmen spent hours with selection (and sometimes basic creation) of materials, assembly, and personalization.aqua_20.gif (1413 bytes) Unfortunately, the resulting sale prices were usually too high for middle class line-yankers.

But times have changed. Pre-designed rod pieces and accessories are now available ala carte from manufacturers. Using computers and cell phones, parts availability and ordering are much simpler processes than yesteryear. Professional rod-builders now have greater access to all machines andaqua_20.gif (1413 bytes) accessories necessary to build distinctive fish sticks.

Not all the benefits of custom rods are related to improved performance. Ownership symbolizes a dedication and love for sport fishing. That’s why they make great gifts for any occasion. Rather than a blah-blah plaque for retiring co-workers, honor them with a distinctive fishing rod done up in company colors.  Rather than another singing fish wall-hanging, show your fishing dad (or mom) you really care – stick a custom stick underaqua_20.gif (1413 bytes) the tree. Custom rods make an awesomely cool present for the soldier returning from overseas.
